1908 – 2004

WINTHROP – Burton L. DuPaul, 95, of Mexico, died early Wednesday morning, April 7, at the Nicholsons Nursing Home.

Born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., June 25, 1908, a son of Laurence T. and Sadie Ann (Murdock) DuPaul, he attended Dixfield schools, graduating in 1924.

In 1942, he married Marion Hall. Together they raised their family at the old Thad White Place on the Webb River in Dixfield. Mrs. DuPaul died July 3, 1982.

Mr. DuPaul lived in the Dixfield and Mexico area his entire life and was employed at Diamond International in Peru for over 40 years.

In his youth he became an expert fly fisherman and enjoyed tying flies, which he did professionally. During the 1930s, he built a cabin on Sabbath Day Pond in Rangeley, where he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

He was very involved in his community throughout his life, including helping to found the Oxford County Association of Retarded Citizens, in which he also served faithfully on the board of directors for over 40 years. As part of his service to the Oxford County A.R.C., he volunteered countless hours at the What Not Shop on Waldo Street in Rumford. Mr. DuPaul also worked with the Visually Impaired Persons Sharing of Rumford and belonged to the Podunk and Trailblazers Snowmobile Clubs of Dixfield and Mexico and the Webb River Valley Sportsmans Club. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Mr. DuPaul wrote a column for the Rumford Falls Times entitled, “Laughing in the Wind” and later published a book by the same name. Later in life, after many years of widowhood, he married his beloved Reba Plant, of Mexico in 1997. Together they enjoyed hiking, camping, gardening, picnics and traveling the northeast.

Survivors include his wife, Reba of Hopkington, N.H.; a son, Burton L. DuPaul Jr. and his wife, Nancy of DeFuniak Spring, Fla.; three daughters, Gerry Boivin and her husband, J. Eugene of Rumford, Carolyn Henry and her husband, Frank of Winthrop and Mary DuPaul of Rumford; grandchildren, Cheri-lynn Romero and her husband, John and children, Katie and Lacie, Burton L. (Skip) DuPaul III and his wife, Erica and son, Nelson, Katie DuPaul, Lynn Ouellette and her husband, Bob and son, Patrick, Richard Henry and his wife, Rebecca and children, Ricky and Caitlyn, Frank B. Henry and friend, Lisa Teske, Christopher H. Boivin and his companion, Jen Blais and children, Brittany, James and Autumn Rain and Summaranne Sounier and children, Kayla, Chrissy, Ricky and Dyson; stepchildren, Ruth Owen and her husband, Derek and Reba Jane Johnson, David Nisbet and his wife, Carol; and many step-great-grandchildren; special friends, Jim and Debbie Rogler and daughter, Hillary; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by a sister, Louise DuPaul.
