1917 – 2004

LITCHFIELD – Herbert Heald, 87, of Tacoma Lakes died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 7.

He was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Pittston the son of Arthur and Marie O’Niel Heald. He was a graduate of Litchfield Academy and married Frances True Lombard on July 2, 1938. She died June 27, 1984.

Mr. Heald worked at White Truck Co. in Massachusetts, for several years, before moving back to Maine, where he opened and operated Herb Heald’s Garage for 60 years.

He was the oldest member of M.O.A. L.S. (Maine Obsolete Auto League) He was known for his restoration of vintage automobiles. Mr. Heald served as a Litchfield Academy Trustee and alumni.

He is survived by four sons, Kenneth M. Heald and wife Gloria of Dade City, Fla., Stephen E. Heald and wife Nancy of Litchfield, Peter A. Heald of Litchfield and H. Russell Heald and wife Carolyn of Plaistow, N.H.; two daughters, Janice I. Grondin of North Monmouth and Joyce Girardin and husband Paul of Greene; one sister, Hattie Blaisdell of Windsor; 15 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Heald Moore; three brothers, Charles Heald, Daniel Heald and Robert Heald; three sisters, Loraine Lord, Laura Blake and Viola Doughty.
