FARMINGTON – Students, faculty, staff and administrators of the University of Maine at Farmington gathered during a dreary Wednesday to take part in the UMF sixth annual Symposium.

With more than 300 students involved in presentations and discussions, the UMF campus was sparkling with many lively topics, including history, politics, ethics, computer science and business strategies.

Interesting topics in this year’s Symposium ranged from Shakespeare – as interpreted by Jerry Springer – to a presentation given by Sam Webb, national chairperson for the Communist Party, USA.

Junior business major Matthew Greenleaf, 22, gave a 15-minute presentation on the popularity of NASCAR and its ever-growing fan base.

“It’s the No. 1 spectator sport in the world, which means big bucks,” said Greenleaf.

“I learned so much in one 15-minute presentation, it was amazing,” said junior Dominic Taliento, 21, of Westbrook. Taliento attended several discussions throughout the day, but felt strongest about the “Business Strategy Games” presentation. “It gave me a real taste of what the business world is like,” he said.

Junior Seanna LaRose, 22, of Auburn is an elementary education major who created a giant poster on comets for her astronomy class.

“It felt really good to be able to teach others for a change,” she said. Along with some of her classmates, LaRose spent her time during the day standing by her poster ready to answer any questions.

The goal of the Symposium was to teach, learn and show off different aspects in education outside of the usual life of the university.
