PRESQUE ISLE (AP) – A 57-year-old man found dead in his home in Masardis was shot, beaten and stabbed, officials said Friday.

While the state medical examiner performed an autopsy on Michael MacDonald, the victim’s 25-year-old son, also named Michael MacDonald, made his initial appearance in Presque Isle District Court on a murder charge.

The younger MacDonald entered no plea and was returned to the Aroostook County Jail, where he’s being held while awaiting a bail hearing next week.

The judge appointed two defense lawyers for MacDonald and ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Troopers went to the state Route 11 home of the father Wednesday night after receiving a call from a family friend to check on his well-being. The elder MacDonald was found dead in the kitchen.

The medical examiner’s office said the victim died of shotgun wounds and blunt force trauma to the head, combined with multiple stab wounds.

Investigators are not commenting on a motive for the killing.

The younger MacDonald, known as Junior, had been living on and off at his father’s home in Masardis, a town of fewer than 300 people located just south of Ashland.
