BETHEL – The first lecture in the Bethel Historical Society’s 2004 series will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, in the Dr. Moses Mason House Exhibit Hall.

“Highlights of the History of Gilead, Maine” will be the topic as part of the society’s recognition of the celebration of the western Maine town’s bicentenary. Speakers will be Howard Reiche and Hugh Chapman, who have compiled a history of Gilead that was published earlier this year. Everyone is welcome and the lecture is free.

The society’s Garden and Grounds Committee made plans recently for the season. Additional volunteers are welcome. Anyone with an interest in gardening who is willing to help with the society gardens is encouraged to call Jackie Cressy at 824-0508 or the society office at 824-2908.

The Faye Taylor Art Show will be held Saturday, May 29, at the Dr. Moses Mason House Exhibit Hall. The theme is “River Ferries on the Androscoggin.” Students in SAD 44 (grades one through six) are invited to enter the contest.

The society will also hold its annual St. Never’s Day sale on May 29. Items in good condition (no clothes) are still being collected. They may be left at the back entrance of O’Neil Robinson House, 10 Broad St. If pick-up is necessary, call the society.
