CAMPTON, N.H. (AP) – The body of a Plymouth State College student was pulled from the Pemigewasset River on Friday, a day after he disappeared while swimming with friends.
Kevin Young, 23, of Loudon, was riding on an inner tube Thursday afternoon when he slipped into the water and was pulled down a series of rapids at Livermore Falls.
Authorities searched until darkness and were back on the water Friday. They found Young’s body shortly before noon just downstream from the falls, in about 12-14 feet of water, said Fish and Game Sgt. Brian Suttmeier.
Young, a senior, was expected to graduate Saturday with a degree in education. The university planned to observe moments of silence during a convocation ceremony Friday night and during Saturday’s commencement ceremony.
The falls have claimed other lives over the years. The nearby beach area, which is owned by the state, has become a hangout for students this week as the school year ends.
“The current is very swift right now and the water is being churned into pretty good rapids in that area,” said Campton Police Chief Chris Warn.
The last fatality was in 1990 when someone fell from the nearby trestle bridge, Warn said.
