If you are counting on Social Security, it is time to commend Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe for the courageous stance they have taken on the federal budget outline.

Because of our senators’ key votes, Congress will have to balance the cost of new spending and tax cuts so they do not add to the deficit. Snowe and Collins have been under great pressure to allow tax cuts (but not new spending) to incur a larger deficit. If tax cuts add to the deficit, future generations will be making larger interest payments.

Thanks are due to Sens. Collins and Snowe for continuing to insist that Congress use fair and reasonable rules in crafting the federal budget.
