WILTON – A Jay man was in critical condition after a dirt-bike accident Saturday night.
Michael Nuzzo, 44, of Jay, was attending a graduation celebration on Main Street in Wilton Saturday evening with his two sons when he took the host’s dirt bike for a spin.
Officer Robert Cole of the Wilton police said it appeared that Nuzzo lost control of the motorcycle and drove it down several rolling hills behind the house, clipped a tree in the woods and came to rest in a rocky stream.
Cole said that Nuzzo’s 15-year-old son heard his father yelling and saw him go over a rise before losing sight of him.
Nuzzo had never previously operated a motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Police were alerted at 6:19 p.m. Saturday to the accident in the woods behind Michael McLain’s home at 1416 Main St.
Approximately 25 rescuers responded to the scene to assist in Nuzzo’s rescue. In addition to Wilton police, Wilton Fire Department and two Lifestar ambulances responded. Nuzzo was carried about 100 feet up hilly terrain to a waiting ambulance. Rescue personnel determined he had suffered a severe head injury, and Nuzzo was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, then taken later by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center, where his condition remains critical.
Because the accident occurred in the woods, a state warden was called in as well. Warden Dennis Burnell of Kingfield is working with Wilton police to investigate the incident.
