SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) – A glance at Sunday’s final round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Country Club:
Winner: Retief Goosen, who shot a 1-over 71 in the final round to beat Phil Mickelson by two shots with a total of 4-under 276.
How he won: Goosen birdied the 16th hole to tie Mickelson then parred the last two holes while Mickelson made double bogey on 17.
Hard day: Ernie Els began the day tied with Mickelson two shots out of the lead. He finished tied for ninth after shooting 80, his worst ever in the Open.
No Tiger: Tiger Woods is now winless in his last eight majors after winning seven of the previous 11. He shot 76 on Sunday to finish 14 shots back, tied for 17th.
Crazy hole: The first two players on the 189-yard par 3 both made triple bogeys. Soon, the USGA was watering the hard green between groups to give balls a chance to stay on the green.
Shot of the day: Retief Goosen’s 25-foot putt to save bogey on the 14th hole.
Phil’s Miss: Mickelson 3-putted from 5 feet on the 17th hole to fall out of the lead.
Notable: Retief Goosen has four PGA Tour wins, and two of them are U.S. Opens.
