NEW SHARON – Edward Ferreira, the special education director of SAD 9, was recovering from surgery Tuesday evening at a Lewiston hospital after being struck by a car.
Ferreira, 48, was training for a marathon Sunday on Industry Road when a car struck him in a hit-and-run accident.
The driver of the car, Paul Hemond, 25, of North Anson, turned himself in to police Monday.
Ferreira’s pelvis was separated and fractured, and all four ligaments in his knee are gone, according to his wife, Patty Murray.
Ferreira underwent surgery Tuesday in which his pelvis was reconstructed with plates and 10 screws, Ferreira said from his hospital bed at Central Maine Medical Center.
The surgery was shorter than expected, and recovery went well, Murray said.
“I’m doing great,” said Ferreira, who was still medicated. “The doctor gave me a thumbs up.”
Murray said her husband is scheduled for knee surgery next Wednesday.
Ferreira’s 16-year-old son, Devin, said earlier that his father was doing better.
He said his father was running on the road where the family lives when he was struck by the car.
“He runs every day,” Devin said. “I think he’s devastated he cannot run for his whole recovery because he’s a runner. He’s an athlete,” Devin said.
He said his father is also supports his children’s athletic endeavors, always going to athletic events to support them.
“He’s going to be all right,” Devin said.
Special education secretary Nancy Chase said a lot of people have called to find out how Ferreira is doing and to say they want to send cards. The district has sent flowers.
Cards may be sent to Edward Ferreira, Central Maine Medical Center, Room 159-B, 300 Main St., Lewiston, ME 04240
