JAY – A fire that is believed to have started in the basement of a home at 726 Franklin Road has caused the principal of the Jay Elementary School to relocate temporarily. No one was at home when the fire started.
State fire investigator Dan Roy was at the site Tuesday trying to determine the cause of the fire, said Jay Fire Chief Brian Shink.
The cause is undetermined, Shink said.
About 35 firefighters from Jay, Livermore Falls and Wilton responded to the 1:07 p.m. fire , which was reported by a neighbor.
Jay Elementary School Principal Beverly Gillespie, who rents the house, is staying with a friend, Shink said. Besides the basement, the fire got into the walls of the kitchen, he said.
Shink did not have an estimate of the damage.
