ROXBURY – Two Mexico men were killed when their vehicles collided nose-to-nose Saturday night. The wife of one of the men and another passenger in his SUV were seriously hurt.
State police are continuing their investigation into the 7:50 p.m. crash on Route 17 not far from Coos Canyon in Byron.
Killed were Richard Thereau, 38, and Scott Kubic, 30.
Police said Thereau apparently lost control of his 1995 GMC pickup and rammed head-on into Kubic’s 1998 Chevy Blazer. The pickup was northbound and headed toward Coos Canyon and the Blazer going southbound when the crash happened.
Brandon Gotto, a passenger in Kubic’s Blazer, was listed in serious condition Sunday night at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Gotto, also of Mexico, is believed to be in his late 20s, according to state police.
Ericka Kubic, again thought by police to be in her late 20s and the wife of Scott Kubic, also was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash. She was listed in stable condition Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
State police were assisted at the crash scene by emergency crews from Mexico and Oxford and Franklin counties.
LifeFlight of Maine helicopters stationed at CMMC and at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor also responded the crash site to transport the injured.
State Trooper Scott Gosselin is handling the investigation into the crash. Further details were not available Sunday night.
