OXFORD – Two people were critically injured Monday night when a car slammed into a tree on King Street.

Oxford police, county sheriff’s officials and Maine state police were investigating the 7:30 p.m. crash as a possible double fatality.

State police were assisting with a reconstruction of the crash site late Monday night. Oxford police remained at the scene investigating the wreck.

It was believed two men were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash was undetermined.

Rabbit Valley Road runs off Route 26 in Oxford, a short distance from the Mechanic Falls town line.

Androscoggin County sheriff’s officials who were in the area originally responded to the crash scene.

The identities and conditions of the victims were not known late Monday.
