BERLIN, Md. – Edward Scheid Custer Sr., Lt. Commander USN Retired, 84, died July 11, in Berlin, Md.

He was born Nov. 13, 1919, in Lansdale, Pa., spent his youth in Dover, Del., and resided in Ocean Pines, Md., and Rangeley.

He was a 1938 graduate of Dover High School, Dover, Del.; a graduate of Beacom Business College, Wilmington, Del.; and attended University of Hawaii, George Washington University and University of Maryland.

Dedicated years of federal service included 27 years in the United States Navy and 10 years at the National Security Agency. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His military assignments included Hawaii, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Germany, Scotland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland.

Mr. Custer was a lifetime member of the Ocean Pines Voluntary Fire Department, a member for 50 years of the Fleet Reserve Association, and had memberships in the Phoenix Society, the United States Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City, former memberships in the United States Power Squadrons of Prince George’s and Worcester Counties, and the Ocean Pines Men’s Golf Association.

Also as a part-time resident of Rangeley, he was a member of the Rangeley Regions Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association, Rangeley Lakes Region Logging Museum, and the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society.

Mr. Custer will be remembered for his community service contributions with the Ocean Pines Voluntary Fire Department as a fire policeman and an ambulance driver. He was a superb counselor and faithful worker as a tax aide for the AARP Foundation of Worcester County, and was an officer and instructor with the United States Power Squadron. He loved all sports, including golf, fly fishing and canoeing.

It can be said that “Ed” truly never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn H. Custer, of Ocean Pines, Md., and Rangeley; his children, Edward S. Custer Jr. and his wife, Carolyn K. Custer, of Barboursville, W.Va., Marilyn L. Perry of Mechanicsville, Md., and Bruce H. Custer and his wife, Carole L. Custer, of Halethorpe, Md.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
