AUBURN – City and fire union leaders will try to regroup this week after members turned down a proposed deal.

City Manager Pat Finnigan said she plans to meet with union leadership later this week to continue talks. A meeting hasn’t been scheduled yet.

Firefighters voted against a contract offer last week, she said. Finnigan said the deal she offered was similar to a contract signed with police unions in the spring. She declined to give exact details.

“Suffice to say, we’re talking about wages and benefits,” Finnigan said.

The police contract gives officers two different raises each year for the next three years – a 3 percent performance raise on the anniversary of their date of hire and a 2 percent hike on July 1 of each year. The city also moved police to a less expensive health care plan.

“Every contract has its own nuances,” Finnigan said. “At this point, I’d like to keep the specifics of this contract within the negotiating committee.”

Finnigan said she briefed city councilors on the proposed deal in executive session last week.

The current contract expired June 30.
