LEWISTON – Two women were arrested on drug charges Wednesday after police stopped a car seen leaving the bus station on Lisbon Street. Investigators said one of the suspects had more than 55 grams of crack cocaine concealed in a body cavity.

Tonia Greene, 21, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Carolyn DeBerry, 25, of Lewiston, each was charged with aggravated trafficking in crack and importation of drugs.

Local police and drug agents went to the bus station shortly before noon Wednesday after Maine Drug Enforcement Agency investigators were told an out-of-state drug dealer would be meeting with a local woman there.

Greene walked off a bus and met with DeBerry around noon, police said. The two women left in DeBerry’s car and headed toward downtown Lewiston.

Police said they pulled over the speeding car on Lisbon Street and questioned the two women inside. After each of the women told different stories about their relationship, they were taken to the police station. Greene, who is three months’ pregnant, admitted she had nearly two ounces of crack hidden in her vagina, police said. She voluntarily turned the stash to drug agents.

Investigators from the Lewiston police Selective Enforcement Team joined up with MDEA agents after receiving a tip that the two women would be meeting at the bus station.

Police said the crack seized in the bust is worth roughly $11,000 on the street, or $200 per gram. Investigators said the crack was intended to be distributed in Lewiston, where out-of-state dealers often come to stay with local crack addicts.

“It’s just a continuation of the supply and demand for crack in the Lewiston area,” said MDEA Supervisor Gerry Baril. “One dealer gets arrested, another takes his place.”

Greene and DeBerry were both taken to the Androscoggin County Jail where they remained Wednesday night.
