AUGUSTA (AP) – Discussions about a $40 million new state borrowing package move to a different forum this week at the State House.

The Legislature’s Appropriations Committee is scheduled to gather Tuesday and members are being asked to review options, starting with a revised package put forth by Gov. John Baldacci.

Baldacci’s package is designed to raise $20 million for the Land for Maine’s Future program, $9 million for transportation projects and $11 million for environmental initiatives.

The Appropriations panel won’t be the only committee getting in some off-session work.

The state Senate is slated to convene next week to take up Baldacci’s latest batch of nominations and before any Senate vote, the nominees are reviewed by joint House-and-Senate panels.

The Senate could be presented with about 20 gubernatorial selections. The confirmation session is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Committee hearings in advance of that session include public hearings Tuesday before the Legal and Veterans Affairs panel.

Nominees up for review are: Jean Ginn Marvin of Cape Elizabeth for appointment to the Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices and five Baldacci choices for state Gambling Control Board: Peter Danton of Saco, Jean Deighan of Bangor, George McHale of Orrington, W. Lawrence Hall of Dedham and Michael Peters of Dixfield.

On Wednesday, the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee is to review the nominations of Patrick St. Peter of Limestone and Mary Leblanc of Portland for appointment to the Loring Development Authority, and John F. Conley of South Portland and James J. Conlon of Brewer for reappointment to the Finance Authority of Maine.

The Judiciary Committee, meanwhile, takes up the nominations of S. Kirk Studstrup of Augusta for reappointment as a Superior Court justice, E. Paul Eggert of Portland, Joseph H. Field of Freeport and Vendean Vafiades of Hallowell for reappointment as District Court judges and Jefferson Ashby of Fort Fairfield for appointment to the Baxter Compensation Authority.

The Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee meets Thursday to consider the nominations of Lee Humphreys of Warren and Clyde Walton of Fayette for reappointment to Board of Pesticides Control and James Tracy of Farmingdale for reappointment to the Maine Harness Racing Commission.
