BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – Authorities said they believe a body found in the Androscoggin River on Monday was that of an elderly man who has been missing since Thursday.
Robert Croteau, 92, was last seen waiting for a shuttle ride in front of the Northern Lights senior housing complex, where he lives. Friends said he could have gotten off at any stop and become lost or disoriented.
Friends said he was becoming more forgetful and may have been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Police arrest man in jester hat
DOVER, N.H. (AP) – Police have arrested the man they suspect wore a jester-style hat and tried to rob a Fleet Bank branch.
Christopher Moore, 40, was arrested Monday while sleeping in a sandlot in the city. Police said they got a tip that a man resembling the one in a bank surveillance photo was seen going into a gas station on Route 108, then walking back to the sandlot.
Investigators say they got the tip while checking out bars after Friday’s incident.
Teen sentenced to federal prison
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A Boston teenager has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to trading drugs for guns in New Hampshire.
Authorities say Mark Lattin, 19, was sentenced Monday to three years. He was arrested by federal agents last fall on charges of being a drug user in possession of firearms. Police say he traded marijuana for a shotgun and two handguns in Portsmouth.
Woman pleads guilty to fraud
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Mary-Jo Hinkle of Dover on Monday pleaded guilty to bank fraud in the embezzlement of $22,000 from her employer, TVC Inc., of Portsmouth, federal prosecutors said.
Hinkle, 40, admitted that in April 2002 she drew 44 checks against the company’s account payable to herself, cash and her creditors.
She faces up to 30 years in prison when she is sentenced on Nov. 22.
Tornado verified over N.H. lake
MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) – A National Weather Service investigator said Monday the twister in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region indeed was a tornado that formed over Lake Winnipesaukee.
Residents of Sanbornton and Meredith reported a funnel cloud during Friday evening’s violent storm. Video from one resident showed a twister in Meredith that uprooted and snapped huge trees. Power lines and poles also were taken down.
Meteorologist Bruce Roberts surveyed the damage and said it started as a microburst and developed into a tornado, rare in northern New England.
No injuries were reported.
N.H. man indicted on drug charges
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Mark Bennett, 43, of Manchester, has been indicted on federal cocaine distribution charges.
Bennett was arraigned Monday on charges he distributed crack cocaine four times last November. The arrest was part of Operation Streetsweeper, the federal program aimed at drug trafficking in New Hampshire’s larger cities.
