LEWISTON – George J. Houle, 87, of 10 Oak St., Lewiston, died Thursday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, following a long illness.

Born in Lewiston on Jan. 21, 1917, he was the son of Oscar and Maria Martel Houle. Educated in local schools, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the 849th Signal Intelligence Service of the U.S. Army.

On April 11, 1942, he was married to the former Roseanna Moreau in Lewiston. He was employed for many years in the local textile industry, working in the Hill and Bates mills. He also worked for Pioneer Plastics, and retired from the Lewiston School Department after working as a custodian for 12 years.

A member of Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 22, and for most of his life enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, of Lewiston; a daughter, Georgette and husband, Roland Pomerleau, of Lewiston; two grandchildren, Susan and husband, Mark Green, of Lewiston, and Sandra and husband, Arthur Bourget, of West Gardiner; and three great-granddaughters, Morgan and Marisa Green and Emma Bourget. He was predeceased by a son, Gerard.
