Lewiston and Auburn football enthusiasts are already discussing the game of the gridiron. It is predicted at this time that Bates will have a strong team of medium weight and composed of snappy men. The Lewiston High and Edward Little High Schools expect to place strong teams in the field this fall. Last season L.H.S. captured the High School championship of the State and did it in pretty style. With this grand record of a year ago, there is naturally more than the usual amount of interest manifested in the game this season by the L.H.S. students.

50 Years Ago, 1954

The Census Bureau said that this year for the first time the United States will have over 100 million persons of voting age. In a new estimate for the November elections, the bureau said that figure would be exclusive of the 2 ½ million voters in the armed services. There will be approximately 100,223,000 civilian Americans old enough to vote this November, compared with 98,135,000 in November 1952, the bureau reported. Some persons old enough to vote however will not be eligible to cast their ballots. Among them will be about 2 ½ million aliens and those old enough to vote who have not met state voting requirements.

25 Years ago, 1979

Three Lisbon youngsters are credited with finding the money taken in a robbery at the Lisbon branch of the Northeast Bank. The youngsters, Eddie Field, 12, Rosanna Field, 10, and Matthew Field, 9, heard about the robbery and decided to join in the search to help police find the blue suitcase which had reportedly been hidden by the robber before a man was apprehended. According to the children’s father, Matthew spotted the large suitcase hidden behind a cross at St. Anne’s Cemetery on River Street in Lisbon shortly after 11 a.m. and gave it to his older brother who turned it over to the Lisbon Police. Unconfirmed report indicated the amount taken was in the vicinity of $4,000.
