LEWISTON – A local man was charged Tuesday night after his car clipped a second vehicle and skidded onto a lawn at College and Russell streets.

Police said 21-year-old Brant McCarthy of Lewiston was driving over the speed limit on Russell Street when his car skidded out of control about 7:45 p.m.

McCarthy’s car struck a Buick Regal driven by Anna Faucher, 74, ripping the bumper off that vehicle. Police said Faucher was turning from Russell onto College Street when her car was struck.

McCarthy’s car slid onto a lawn in front of a house at the intersection, barely missing a tree before stopping against shrubs. McCarthy suffered a nosebleed in the crash. Faucher was not hurt.

A man driving a third car near the intersection said Faucher’s bumper flew into the air and struck the front of his Mercury Sable. He was not hurt, and damage to his car was minor.

Police who responded to the wreck measured McCarthy’s skid marks at nearly 200 feet on the road. Investigators estimated the car slid a total of 220 feet before stopping on the front lawn at 366 College St. Nobody was home at that address at the time of the crash.

The crash was being investigated by Lewiston police Officer Crystal Bourgoin. At least a half dozen witnesses gave investigators their accounts of the wreck.

McCarthy was driving toward the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, Faucher in the opposite direction, when the cars collided.

McCarthy and Faucher each had passengers, who were not hurt.
