Diamondbacks 4, Reds 3
CINCINNATI – Alex Cintron hit an RBI single with one out in the 11th inning, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Andy Green tripled off the right-field wall with one out against Joe Valentine (1-3). After Quinton McCracken walked, Cintron hit a soft liner to center.
Brian Bruney (3-3) allowed one hit in the 10th for the win. Greg Aquino pitched the 11th for his eighth save.
The Reds trailed 3-1 in the seventh when Austin Kearns scored on Jacob Cruz’s pinch-hit double off the left-field wall. Adam Dunn tied it with his 38th homer of the season and second in three games leading off the eighth.
Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb had a season-high eight strikeouts while allowing six hits and two runs with two walks in 6 1-3 innings. He lowered his ERA to 3.67.
Reds starter Brandon Claussen gave up eight hits and three runs with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings. He also threw two wild pitches.
Back-to-back doubles by Sean Casey and Dunn with two outs in the first inning gave the Reds an early lead.
Arizona tied the score in the second when Shea Hillenbrand scored from third on a wild pitch – ball four to Luis Terrero. Terrero snapped the 1-all tie in the fourth inning with a two-out solo homer into the Reds bullpen in left-center, his second career homer.
The Diamondbacks made it 3-1 in the fifth with help from Reds center fielder Wily Mo Pena. Dunn, the left fielder, appeared to be in position to catch McCracken’s routine flyball to left-center when Pena called him off, then allowed the ball to drop. McCracken was credited with a double. He moved to third on Claussen’s wild pitch and scored on Cintron’s single to right.
Notes: Pena returned to Cincinnati’s lineup after missing five starts with a sprained left wrist … Ryan Freel’s third-inning stolen base was the fourth in four tries over five games with Chris Snyder catching … Felipe Lopez was hitless in 14 at-bats before being credited with an infield single in the third that was bobbled by shortstop Cintron as he tried to throw Freel out at third base.
