DETROIT (AP) – A construction platform fell Friday as four workmen were painting a highway overpass, killing one worker and critically injuring the other three, police said.

The men, who worked for a company contracted by the Michigan Department of Transportation, were working on the overpass of Interstate 75 in southwest Detroit. They were attempting to lower a 20-by-30-foot platform when a cable holding it up snapped shortly after 11 a.m., police said.

“For some reason, the platform gave way. All four men fell and hit their heads,” police Sgt. John Claybourne said.

The injured men were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital. Police were not releasing their names because the families had not been notified. They were employed by Atsalis Bros. Painting in Clinton Township, the transportation department said.

A woman who answered the phone at Atsalis Bros. said the company had no comment.

After the accident, a person in a white construction hat walked around the scene of the accident snapping pictures of the downed platform, which had been hanging from the overpass. Police and state investigators also were on the scene.

It was uncertain whether the men were wearing harnesses, officials said.
