GREENWOOD – Selectman Ivan Roberts said he has no intention of resigning, even though a petition to recall him from office was officially accepted Tuesday.
The Board of Selectmen received the petition, which has 65 signatures. It meets the recall requirement that 10 percent of residents voting in the last gubernatorial election be represented.
Roberts said Tuesday he does not plan to resign.
“I have two sons, and I have always told them not to be quitters,” the selectman said. “I have no idea what the charges are against me.”
There have been allegations that Roberts has overspent the selectmen’s budget by charging too much for travel and other expenses while attending state meetings and training courses related to his position.
There have also been allegations that Roberts has been rude or difficult to work with, he said.
But the petition says only that the signers are asking for a special town meeting to see whether “the Town shall vote to recall Ivan Roberts, Selectman and Assessor of the Town of Greenwood.”
Roberts isn’t the only one unsure of the reason for the recall.
There has been a lot of hearsay, resident Henry Stewart said after speaking before the board Tuesday, but he is unaware of any official charges brought against Roberts.
Stewart addressed the Board of Selectmen, he said, because “I just thought that they should get the town attorney involved and that there should be a fair process.”
He was the only resident to speak on the possible recall Tuesday.
According to the town’s recall ordinance, which was adopted by the voters in March, residents may petition for the recall of elected municipal officers. The town clerk must certify that all the petition requirements are met before the document is submitted to the selectmen.
“The selectmen upon receipt of the certified petition shall within 10 days time of receipt order an Open Town Meeting election, to be held not less than 30 nor more than 60 days thereafter,” the ordinance reads.
Board members Fred Henderson and Wayne Hakala took no action on the petition Tuesday.
“We will continue on with it the best that we can and try to do the right thing,” Henderson said shortly after Stewart spoke.
Town Manager Kim Sparks said the board will set a date for the recall vote at its next meeting.
