MONMOUTH – Three games into the season, the Monmouth Mustangs had relied on
Bianca Cloutier for all of their scoring. Tuesday, their offense finally took on a team approach.
Jenn Lola and Brittany Scirica both netted goals as the Mustangs rallied in the second half for a 2-1 win over Lisbon.
“Jenn and I have been taking most of the shots,” said senior co-captain Cloutier. “But we needed to have more people contribute so we can be a threat as a team. I think we’re playing real well together.”
Trailing 1-0, Cloutier used her athleticism to keep the ball inbounds while racing down the right wing. As she reached the corner she battled a pair of Greyhound defenders before coming away with the ball on the end line. From there she chipped a crossing pass toward the far corner and Lola knocked it into the goal at the 10:22 mark of the second half.
“We practice trying to keep the ball away from the goalie,” said Cloutier. “I crossed the ball over and Jenn was there.”
Less than six minutes later, the Mustangs (2-2) made three passes to set up Scrica’s game-winner.
First, Lola made a back pass to Cortney Barrett, who lofted a high arcing ball into the crease area. Ashley Cote, with Lisbon keeper Gabrielle Mathieu (16 saves) bearing down, headed the bounding ball away to her left and Scirica touched it into the open goal.
“We knew if we could get the ball away from the keeper we could be successful,” said Monmouth coach Steve Bodge.
The Greyhounds (2-2) were outshot 11-5 in the first half, but they had the better offensive chances. One shot deflected off the crossbar above Monmouth keeper Moe Beaulieu (eight saves) while another ricocheted off the head of a Monmouth defender in front.
They finally capitalized off a flip throw by sophomore fullback Ashley Mason. Mason’s throw in was first touched by teammate Soliel Mathieu before Courtney Stewart rushed in put the loose ball past Beaulieu.
“If we get a chance to throw in,” said Lisbon coach Claude Rioux, “we can
capitalize. But you need to have the people there to go to the ball when (Mason) gets it in.”
The first half was fast paced with the two teams going end to end with little resistance at midfield.
“They always play us tough,” said Bodge. “They play exceptionally hard”
The Greyhounds’ chances were limited in the second half, but they did have two late in the match.
Stewart dribbled out of the corner past a Mustang defender with just under four minutes to play, but her shot from 20 yards out struck the side of the net. Lisbon’s final opportunity came moments later when Siobhan Riordan’s free kick from 35 yards out was caught in traffic by Beaulieu.
