AUBURN – The School & College Planning and Management publication recently notified Harriman Associates Architects and Engineers that its designs of the Lunder Library at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield and the Bion R. Cram Library at Fryeburg Academy have been selected for an Honorable Mention in the 2004 Education Design Showcase published annually.

Completed in August 2002, Kennebec Community College’s Lunder Library is twice the size of the previous library, providing space for books as well as for the school’s information technology program. In addition, this library/information technology center provides the school’s many commuter students with a place to study between classes.

The Lunder Library is positioned at the head of the school’s traditional quad and features a curved, brick exterior. A colonnade of red maples is planned for the front of the building to follow the curve.

Fryeburg Academy’s Bion R. Cram Library was completed in August 2003. Its brick exterior is in keeping with the context of the campus and surrounding buildings, with precast concrete and detailing of the overstated arched-opening adding a contemporary touch. Inside, natural wood is used abundantly with orange, green and yellow paint providing a bright touch to classrooms and corridors.

Harriman Associates provides architecture and engineering design services for education, government, commercial and health care clients throughout New England from offices in Auburn and Portland, Maine, and Portsmouth, N.H.
