OXFORD – The town has been awarded a state grant to develop recreational facilities at the site of the old fire station in the village.
Interim Manager Sharon Jackson announced the $22,500 grant at Thursday’s meeting. The money comes from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and will be put toward the development of tennis courts, a horseshoe court and a skating rink at the site.
Jackson helped convince voters at the June town meeting to support the outdoor recreation project, which still must receive final approval from the National Park Service.
Residents expressed concern at the time that accepting grant money would mean the land would be forever tied to recreational use.
The old fire station, which became vacant with the construction of the new Oxford Public Safety Building on Route 26, has been renovated with new siding, other exterior improvements and new plumbing.
