HIRAM (AP) – A 14-year-old boy who drowned in the Ossipee River got caught up in the river’s strong currents while swimming from one side to the other, officials said.

Matthew Lampher of Bowdoin, an eighth-grade student at Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham, drowned while attempting to cross the river at about 2:30 Sunday afternoon from Hiram to Parsonsfield.

Maine Warden Service spokesman Mark Latti said the boy’s body was recovered by warden service divers at around 6 p.m. He said the boy was not an experienced swimmer.
