TURNER – The Lewiston Blue Devils certainly know how to deliver a knockout blow.
Tuesday night they broke open a 1-0 match against the Leavitt Hornets with three goals in a span of two minutes and 31 seconds en route to a 7-0 victory.
Nate Farnsworth put the Blue Devils (8-2-1) on the board midway through the first half on a direct kick.
Then came the fireworks 11 minutes later.
Mohamed Mohamed ignited the outburst as he settled a pass from Matt Manley, deked a Leavitt defender and fired a low shot past keeper Brian Leighton (12 saves). Just 44 seconds later, Adam Wilding carried the ball down the right wing and crossed a pass beyond Leighton to an open Jon Fournier. All Fournier had to do was tap the ball into an open net.
“He put it right on the ground to my foot,” said Fournier. I didn’t have to do much.”
Next up was Manley. His shot deflected off a pair of Hornet defenders before finding the back of the net.
“Our kids have really meshed well,” said Lewiston coach Mike McGraw of his team’s improved play since losing a pair of matches early in the season. “It was just a matter of time.”
“We weren’t marking men,” said Leavitt coach Isiah Davis. “They had men open all over the place in the first half.”
Trailing 4-0, the Hornets (2-6-1) didn’t exactly fold their tents after the break. They outshot the Blue Devils 14-6 in the second half only to be thwarted time and again by keeper Brian Nason.
In the early stages of the second, the junior stopped both Adam Sawyer and Zach Burgess in one flurry from close range. Those were just two of his 20 saves on the night, with most of them being highlight reel material.
“Leavitt pushed it up a notch and a half and maybe two,” said McGraw. “Nason rose to the occasion.”
The increase in intensity also led to an increase in physical play as the two teams were whistled for a combined five yellow cards in the final 40 minutes.
“It was an intense game,” said Fournier. “Unfortunately, things happen.”
Lewiston would pull out the killer instinct again by popping in a pair of similar scores just 16 seconds apart. First, Dave Patry was fed a long pass from Fournier. Patry raced ahead and pushed it past Leighton. Then it was Manley popping in his second goal of the game as Wilding boomed a lead pass that Manley collected before breaking in one on one. Husayn Carnegie capped the scoring by heading in a high, lofting pass from Bob Labbe.
