AUBURN – Becky Lewis and Elisha Dorso each had a goal and an assist as St. Dom’s posted a decisive 2-0 win over Freeport in Western Maine Conference field hockey action on Tuesday.

The Saints had lost to Freeport two weeks ago.

St. Dom’s (10-1) set the tone early and proceeded to dominate nearly all of the first half, with 11 penalty corners, but were foiled by several high hits.

Saints’ midfielders Beth Shutt, Malley O’Shea and Kate Landry controlled the play.

“The team ream really stepped up the play,” Shutt said. “Our plan coming in was to score on them early and when we did, I think Freeport was shocked. Then our defense cleared the balls out of the way.”

St. Dom’s scored early on a beautiful goal by Lewis, as she fired a shot past Falcon goalie Rebecca Powers on the short side five minutes, eight seconds into the game.

“Our intensity level paid off today,” Lewis said. “We didn’t let up.”

Freeport (5-4-2) couldn’t put together a sustained drive without being whistled for an infraction. Erin Pierce had the best chance, but Saints freshman goalie Elizabeth Bennett (five saves) stepped out to kick the ball away.

Dorso scored an insurance goal with an assist from Lewis midway through the second half. “We’re confident, but not over confident,” Dorso said. “We all know that anything can happen. The forward line has come together and is scoring goals. Our defense has really stepped up and is getting it done.”
