LEWISTON – On the day of the final presidential debate, Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., will visit Maine to talk with voters in town hall meetings in Bangor and Lewiston.

It will be Elizabeth Edwards’ first visit to Maine during the presidential campaign. The Kerry/Edwards campaign announced the planned visit Monday.

Edwards’ visit to Lewiston on Wednesday afternoon will be hosted by Maine Women for Kerry-Edwards. The session is described as a town hall-style meeting, with Edwards to discuss the challenges that face working women in today’s economy.

Doors to the session will open at 1 p.m., with Edwards expected to speak about 1:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. A limited number of tickets is available at the Lewiston Victory 2004 Office, 110 Lisbon St. The office’s telephone number is 689-2140.

Earlier Wednesday, Edwards is scheduled to host a similar gathering in Bangor to talk with seniors about the skyrocketing costs of health care and prescription drugs. In conjunction with the session, Edwards will meet with members of the Maine Council of Senior Citizens, who will be on their way to Canada via bus to buy prescription drugs they need but cannot afford at home.

Doors for the Bangor meeting, to be held at the Sea Dog Banquet and Conference Center, 26 Front St., open at 10:15 a.m. Edwards is expected to speak at 11 a.m.

That event is also free and open to the public. A limited number of tickets is available at the Bangor Victory 2004 Office, 56 Main St. The Bangor office’s telephone number is 942-5830.

Kerry and George W. Bush will hold the third of their presidential debates Wednesday night at the University of Arizona in Tempe.
