TURNER – Kristina Scontras scored two goals, including one in overtime, to lift No. 10 Cape Elizabeth to a 2-1 upset victory Saturday over No. 7 Leavitt in the preliminary round of the Western Class B field hockey tournament.

Leavitt dominated throughout regulation, but several missed opportunities proved costly. The Hornets held a 13-2 advantage on penalty corners, but failed to produce any quality scoring chances.

“It’s really frustrating,” said Leavitt coach Wanda Ward-MacLean, who passed 200 career wins this season. “We dominated the play and were the better team, but that’s not what the scoreboard shows. There were plenty of chances, but we just were not getting a stick on the ball inside the circle.

Cape Elizabeth (2-11-2) played an up-tempo game and its conditioning eventually paid off. The Capers, who will play No. 2 York in a quarterfinal game Wednesday, assumed control immediately in the extra session.

Hannis Landis passed the ball forward to Scontras, who one-timed a shot past Hornets goalie Kristin Schrepper. The goal occurred 1:24 into overtime and shocked the Hornets.

“It’s quite a win,” Cape Elizabeth coach Lori Broadhurst said. “A key for us was going after the ball, along with getting the proper spacing. That allowed us to spread the field out. We played with a lot of intensity.”

Leavitt had pressed the issue as forward Jessica Paladino and wing Tiffany Poland worked inside to get shots off, but several sailed wide of the goal. Hautumn Smith had numerous long hits, but they were blocked by Cape defenders Sam Welch and Julia Inleglia.

Leavitt tied the game on a goal by Madison MacLean with 7:16 remaining in regulation. Poland fired a shot from the right side and MacLean redirected the ball into the left corner past Cape goalie Allie Hill (eight saves).

“It’s hard on the girl’s right now,” Ward-MacLean said. “We actually played one of our best games all year, but it shows that you can’t just show up and win. I hope the young players remember the feeling, so hopefully they will come back and work hard, so they don’t find themselves of having to play a preliminary game next year”

The Leavitt defense of Caroline Bochtler, Jen Poland and Nicole Lagasse prevented the Capers from attacking. But a defensive breakdown allowed Cape to reverse the flow.

Scontras scored on a Welch assist, with 20:13 left in regulation.
