LEWISTON – Leon Ardane Greene, 89, of Strong, died Friday, Oct. 15, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Lewiston, where he had been a patient this past week.

He was born on July 31, 1915, in Auburn, the son of Thomas Ralph and Jane Elizabeth (McMurtrie) Greene.

Leon graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, class of 1934, having excelled in cross-country skiing & ski-jumping. He attended the University of Maine in Orono, majoring in engineering and forestry. His education was interrupted by World War II when he served with the Army Air Corps and had attended flight school in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

He pursued careers in forestry and surveying in Massachusetts, the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and in Western Maine, where he was also a real estate broker. He also worked for the State of Maine establishing snowmobile clubs and laying out trails.

In his sixties, he built a cabin on Pratt Mountain in New Vineyard where he lived simply in harmony with nature for two decades. He enjoyed the wildlife around his home, improving woods roads and snowmobiling widely. He was an avid Red Sox fan in his last years, keeping records of the games from his armchair at Valley Brook Senior Housing in Strong.

He was married in Hartford, Conn. on August 24, 1941 to the late Alice Dupre, who died in Lewiston, on Aug. 7, 1991.

Only distant relatives survive and he was predeceased by a brother, Dana Greene.
