POLAND – The Poland Panthers enjoyed a fine track season. Both the boys and girls teams placed 6th out of 37 clubs entered in the 2004 Maine Junior Olympic Track & Field Championship. In individual age groups, the Panther Mites boys finished first.
Several athletes broke team records during the season, as follows: Will Shafer, New Gloucester, 800-meter, 2:58 (record formerly held by teammate Nick Page, Poland); Andrew Peterson, Poland, 400-meter, 1:11.9 (formerly held by David Carney, Poland); Michael Whalen, Minot, discus, 86’10” (formerly held by Sam Wheeler); Brittney Bell, Poland, triple jump, 30’7.5″ (formerly held by Alice Alden); Alexa Doyer, Mechanic Falls, girls pole vault, 5’6″.
At the end of the season, the Panthers celebrated with a cake and beverage gathering and the following trophies were presented: Coaches’ Award, Brittany Bell, Poland; Most Improved Female, Daisy Lavoie-Chappell, Poland; Most Improved Male, Wyatt Ray, Poland; Long Distance (Amanda Ivey) Award, Maggie Norton, Poland; Jumping (Andrew Roy) Award, Alexa Doyer, Mechanic Falls; Panther Award, Emily Bertrand, Minot; and Derek Stegman, Poland; Top Performance, Will Shafer, New Gloucester; and Andrew Peterson, Poland; Throwing (Ethan Barton) Award, Michael Whalen, Minot.
