LEWISTON – Two high-profile political figures plan to stump today in the Twin Cities for their respective presidential picks.

Onetime presidential aspirant and former Sen. Bill Bradley of New Jersey is expected to campaign here today for John Kerry, a campaign spokesman said.

As of Monday evening, the event, Maine Middle-class Squeeze, was scheduled to be held at 2:30 p.m. today at 110 Lisbon St., home of the Democrats’ Maine Victory 04 headquarters. Bradley will be joined by Anna Burger, international secretary treasurer of the Service Employees International Union.

Zell Miller, a Democratic U.S. senator from Georgia supporting George W. Bush, is scheduled to speak at a Republican rally at 3 p.m. at Lost Valley Ski Lodge, 200 Lost Valley Road in Auburn.

Both events are open to the public.

After serving three terms in the U.S. Senate, where he was regarded as a tax policy expert, Bradley challenged Al Gore in the Democratic presidential primary in 2000. He dropped out of the race in March.

Before turning to politics, Bradley gained national renown playing for the New York Knicks basketball team from 1967 to 1977 as a forward, including two team championship years.

A Princeton graduate, he studied for two years at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes scholar. He also has authored five books.

Bradley had endorsed former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary.

Miller, who calls himself a conservative Democrat, served two terms as governor of Georgia before he was elected in 2000 to the U.S. Senate.

After announcing he would not seek re-election, he threw his support behind Bush and was featured speaker at the Republican National Convention in New York.

He is the author of six books.
