Dear Sun Spots: Santa’s not just for kids anymore!

We know that there are some adults out there who are giving all that they have to their kids, their communities and their jobs, and don’t have any left for themselves.

Do you know of an elderly person who doesn’t get many visitors? A single mom who would love to have a free baby sitter for a day off? Someone who needs some wood to stay warm? A mom and/or a dad who would love to come home to dinner already made? Let us help! We will do our best to provide anything that would make an adult you know smile this holiday season.

Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for old movies of all the classical composers such as Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Strauss and Schubert. – Jeannette T., No Town.

Answer: In addition to responses from readers, you might want to try www.amazon.com, which lists several movies about the great composers. Among them:

“Song of Love” (1947) starring Katharine Hepburn – a love story of the marriage of composer Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck Schumann.

“A Song to Remember” (1945) about the short life of romantic composer Frederic Chopin.

“Mahler” (1975) starring Robert Powell as the great Jewish romantic from 19th-century Vienna, drafting enormous symphonic works in the midst of rising anti-Semitism.

“Lisztomania: (1975) tells the story of superstar composer Franz Liszt through a freewheeling series of pop allegories, kitsch, quotes and pastiches.

“The Music Lovers: (1971) – Ken Russell’s 1970 biography of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky starring Richard Chamberlain is a portrait of artistic brilliance and the Russian composer’s mounting guilt over everything: including his homosexuality, his marriage to the increasingly miserable and mad Nina, played by Glenda Jackson, and his hidden attraction to Court Anton Chiluvsky (Christopher Gable), as well as his suggestively incestuous relations with a sister while growing up.

Dear Sun Spots: I am desperately seeking someone willing to make me a pair of curtains for a small window. They must be plain, tabbed, fire-engine red and in a slightly nubby fabric such as weaver’s cloth. I shall even require this person to take the measurements, advise me as to length/apron or sill and help me select the fabric as I’m totally clueless about all this.

I have searched diligently for these both in stores and through mail order and have concluded they must be custom-made. Thank you. Please call me at (207) 782-0554 before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. – Nancy Peters, Auburn.

Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots discussed this with some seamstresses, who really would prefer that you choose your own material and provide them with measurements, etc. You might want to consider somebody who custom makes curtains such as:
