The Lewiston Maineiacs rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit with three consecutive goals to end the first period and never looked back, upending the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5-2 at Centre Henry-Leonard on Friday.
The win came in the team’s first game of a three-games-in-three-days stretch, and is the Maineiacs’ seventh in their last nine games.
“When you win on the road right off the start, it gives you confidence,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “I am not saying we are on a roll, but we played well tonight.”
Alexandre Picard had a goal and three assists and Alex Bourret had three points in his first game back after serving a one-game suspension. Jaroslav Halak stopped 37 of 39 shots to record the victory between the pipes.
“Halak made some good saves, that is for sure,” said Jodoin. “And Bourret, he ended up plus-4, and he is obviously a big part of our offense. He is an asset out on the ice.”
Marc-Andre Cliche did sit out the game, however, still sore from an injury earlier in the season.
On the other side, Loic Lacasse made 29 saves in the losing effort, and the teams squared off for four fights, a statistic that has become worth keeping during meetings between Lewiston and Baie-Comeau.
“You know, it is sad sometimes to see this happen,” said Jodoin.
“Sometimes, I don’t know if I like the game when the philosophy of the coach is to go out there and fight every shift. I am disappointed about that. The idea of this league is to teach the kids how to play hockey, how to pass and shoot, to forecheck and work in systems. What fun is it when all you do is come down to the rink and fight?”
The win did not come easily, and it came after Baie-Comeau had scored first, just 5:11 into the game on a shot from Alexandre Blais.
Bobby Gates, Mathieu Aubin and Picard got things rolling for Lewiston with three goals in a six-minute stretch to put the Maineiacs up 3-1.
In the second, amid several stoppages, Lewiston went ahead 4-1 on Michal Korenko’s first goal of the season on a blast from the point.
The Drakkar slipped their second goal past Halak early in the third, but Bourret finished off the game with a shorthanded empty-net goal, giving the Maineiacs the road win.
Next up for Lewiston is a Saturday matinee in Chicoutimi against the division-leading Sagueneens, who lost in overtime Friday night, 4-3, to Halifax.
