It will be all on the line when the Telstar field hockey team faces Eastern Maine champion Stearns for the Class C state championship today at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.
The game is scheduled to start at noon.
Telstar (15-1-1) is seeking its first state crown since winning it in 1978 and 1979. The Rebels have won five regional crowns since 1989.
Among the obstacles facing the two foes is the speedy playing surface of the artificial turf.
The teams will need to adjust since the ball will roll great distances on long hits. Also, the lack of bounces should make things interesting because it limits the number of infraction calls.
Telstar recently visited the man-made turf at Bates College.
“The team is very focused,” Telstar coach Gail Wight said. “They’ve been taking it one game at a time and they are confident, but not cocky. Every one of them are very aware of their job in order for the team to win.”
Stearns (13-4) will have plenty of momentum after having won its first-ever Eastern championship. The senior-laden Minutemen accomplished the feat by winning road games against the Nos. 1 and 2 teams.
The lone common opponent is Winthrop, which lost 3-1 to Stearns in the regional final. Telstar, who tied the Ramblers 1-1 in September, outscored Jay, Lisbon and Livermore Falls 9-2 in the playoffs. The Rebels had to come from behind in two games.
Telstar platoons goalies Heather Gionet and Stephanie Tripp. Its strong defense has been a key with sweeper Jillian Kimball, and halfbacks Lindsay Hart, Kara Jacques and Jessica Farrington.
The main offensive threats are juniors Kayla Mills (12 goals, six assists) and Mallory Brown (10, 10), but there are several other scorers. They include Danna Wilson (six, five), Liz Rosenberg (five, six), Bailey Davis (five goals), Nola Wentworth, Stephanie Bennett, Chea Davis and Megan Bailey.
Telstar has history on its side. Mill’s, Jacques’ and Wilson’s mothers each played on state championship teams.
In the Class A championship, Skowhegan squares off against Bonny Eagle at 10 a.m. Belfast faces York in the Class B championship at 2 p.m. Both games will also be played at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
