Republican James Hamper won the District 100 House seat Tuesday, coming in well ahead of Democratic candidate Kathleen Dougherty.

Hamper, of Oxford, has long been involved in town politics. He said his interest in the political process began when he joined state Representative Ted Heidrich’s team in January 1998.

His past positions have included seats on the Oxford Budget Committee, Oxford Planning Board and Oxford County Republican Committee.

Hamper had a straightforward platform. Maine people “are taxed enough,” he said, adding that one of his top priorities would be to curb the growth of spending.

Dougherty, of Otisfield, stressed the importance of nonpartisan politics while campaigning.

Dougherty grew up in Eliot, attended college in Maine and now works as a customer service representative at L.L. Bean’s Hunting and Fishing Store. She said she is well aware of the problem the state faces as young people continue to leave for jobs elsewhere.

Job creation and making the cost of living affordable in the state are important, she said.
