RUMFORD – The pumpkin and apple pies submitted for the Octoberfest pie-baking contest looked outstanding and, according to the judges, tasted great. During the morning before the judging was performed, many of the visitors stopped by.

Prizes were awarded for first, second and third, based on the judging criteria. Four characteristics were evaluated: overall appearance, crust, consistency and taste, with five levels rating each characteristic.

The apple pie that won the competition and the blue ribbon was submitted by Melissa Munzner of Rumford. Second-place red ribbon went to Linda French of Rumford Center. In the pumpkin pie category the blue ribbon was won by Leslie Skibitsky of Dixfield.

One pie was auctioned off to the crowd and the balance of the sampled pies were sold by the Rotary Interact group who ran the food service at Octoberfest.
