PORTLAND – Henry Yankowsky, 72, loving husband and father, died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Nov. 7, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Portland on April 23, 1932, son of Henry and Flora Mae (Berry) Yankowsky. He graduated from Portland High School in 1950. He began his work at Brockway-Smith in 1955, and continued to work there for the next 43 years, retiring as master glazier in 1998.

He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. As a young man he enjoyed riding his Harley pan-head with its big solo seat. He married his wife, Joyce K. Elliot on Sept. 18, 1954.

All through his life he devoted himself to furniture making, painting, picture framing and folk art. He would often go beachcombing on Willard Beach and incorporate his findings into his artwork.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Yankowsky; a son, Henry and his wife, Karon, of Dallas Plantation; two daughters, Margaret Peters and her husband, Tom, of South Windham, and Janet Yankowsky, of Portland; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Peters, of South Windham; a sister, Flora Z. Whiting, of Ridgecrest, Calif. He enjoyed the time he spent with his cousin, Richard Yankowsky, of Portland.

He was predeceased by his mother, and father.
