LEWISTON – Melville R. Hanson Jr., 58, of South Main Street in Auburn, died at Central Maine Medical Center on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

He was born in Brunswick on Sept. 20, 1946, the son of Melville R. Hanson Sr. and Helen Allen Hanson.

“Mel” graduated high school at Monmouth Academy and achieved a bachelors degree from The University of Maine in Gorham.

He was a dedicated teacher for 33 years, starting at Walton and later at Edward Little High School, and retiring from Leavitt High School in August of 2003.

On June 25, 1971, Melville married the former Joyce Michaud and settled in Auburn to raise their family. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Lewiston.

He was also a coach for softball, basketball, golf, and the math team. He enjoyed playing golf, going camping, traveling to the coast, and playing with his grandson and good buddy, Gavin.

The special times in his life would always include the time he spent with his family and friends.

He leaves his wife, Joyce; one son, Joel M. Hanson; two daughters, Jessica L. and Kathleen M. Hanson; a grandson, Gavin Hanson; two sisters, Janet Feeley and Sharron Tellson and her husband, John; two step-brothers, Bruce and Christopher Hanson; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents.
