BRUNSWICK – Nonprofit organizations in the greater Brunswick area are invited to apply for Bowdoin College’s 2005 Common Good Grant.

Applications are available from the Bowdoin College Community Service Resource Center and are due Monday, Feb. 7.

Due to a restricted gift from an anonymous donor, a Bowdoin student committee will award Common Good Grants for the fourth consecutive year.

The student committee will review applications and award $10,000 in grants, with no individual grant exceeding $2,500. Any nonprofit organization in the greater Brunswick area (Brunswick, Topsham, Bath, Freeport, Harpswell, Bailey Island, Orrs Island, Bowdoinham, Woolwich, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls, Bowdoin, and Yarmouth) may apply.

“The Common Good Grant is a great opportunity for local nonprofits to fund small projects that may not otherwise happen,” said Bowdoin senior Libby Nells, co-coordinator of the student committee. “The grant program is a valuable learning experience for Bowdoin students and has fostered lasting partnerships between the college and organizations in the greater Brunswick area.”

For more information or to request an application, contact Nells (enells@bowdoin.edu) or Bowdoin sophomore Hope Stockton (hstockto@bowdoin.edu), or call Bowdoin’s Community Service Resource Center, 798-4133.

All applicants will be notified of funding decisions on or before Monday, April 4. Checks will be awarded Thursday, April 21, at Bowdoin’s Common Good Grant Awards Ceremony. Grants are intended for use between April 21 and April 15, 2006.

An optional grant-writing workshop for those organizations applying will be held on Friday, Jan. 14. It is an informational workshop and participation has no bearing on grant decisions.

The program was established to teach Bowdoin College students about grants and philanthropy while building a relationship with nonprofit organizations in the greater-Brunswick community.

The grants are intended to help maintain sustained programs and to fund new initiatives that impact local communities.
