NEWRY – The state medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death of a Massachusetts man who was killed when he skied off an expert slope and into the woods at the Sunday River ski resort over the weekend.

John Kerr, 46, of Sharon, may have hit a tree or a lift tower near the White Heat trail on Saturday, according to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department.

Kerr’s death is Maine’s first skier fatality of the season.

The sheriff’s office was awaiting the official cause of death from the medical examiner.

Chief Deputy Jim Davis said investigators were not aware of any medical condition that may have contributed to the accident and had no reason to believe he was intoxicated.

A spokeswoman at the medical examiner’s office in Augusta said Wednesday afternoon that the cause of death isn’t expected to be known until sometime next week pending receipt of autopsy results.
