PARIS – An experimental ice skating rink will be erected in Moore Park after a special kit is purchased online.

Members of the Paris Parks and Recreation Committee on Monday voted 9-0 to approve the purchase of a 40- by 60-foot rink made by NiceRink of Genoa City, Wis. The group agreed to meet on a future Sunday afternoon to put the rink together.

“Are we going to get it in this year?” member Brian Phinney asked, sounding skeptical. He asked whether the committee planned to thaw the ground to pound in stakes that will keep the rink in place.

“That’s where we’re relying on your help,” joked Chairman Dana Chandler. On a more serious note, he said, “Every attempt” will be made to get the rink up and running this year.

The rink was approved by the Paris Board of Selectmen on Dec. 13, with the condition that interim Town Manager Elisa Whiteley first look into the issue of liability insurance coverage. Chandler on Monday announced the additional coverage will cost $50 for the year.

According to a printout of a Web page distributed at the meeting, the NiceRink kit will cost about $890. The Parks and Recreation Committee also will have to purchase plywood or boards to construct the rink, Chandler said.

Chandler said new Town Manager Sharon Jackson told him Oxford purchased a similar kit from the same company and spent about $1,000 to install the rink.

In other business, Chandler announced the approaching budget season. He did not have information on the committee’s 2003-2004 budget on hand, but he said it was about $39,000. The budget includes pay for a part-time parks and recreation director.

Committee members agreed to begin thinking about projects for the next year and the associated costs.

Chandler proposed a rough budget of $39,131, which included $16,680 for field maintenance; $6,451 for baseball, softball and basketball programs; and $12,000 for a part-time director.
