PARIS – An accidental shooting late Friday afternoon on Nichols Street left one man with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Paris Police Chief David Verrier said George Stickney Jr., 24, was treated and released from Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway after the shooting, which occurred about 4 p.m.
Verrier said the shooter was Sean Bergeron, 20, of Harrison, who, with Stickney and others, rents the 147 Nichols St. house owned by David Gravier.
Verrier said Bergeron was sitting in the kitchen, unloading his .357 revolver after he, Stickney and one other male came inside after shooting at targets in the yard.
He said several witnesses in the house at the time said the gun went off, and the round hit the floor and ricocheted, hitting Stickney in the leg. Stickney was playing a video game in the living room at the time, Verrier said. Bergeron and others in the home rushed Stickney to SMH, and hospital officials called Paris police to report the shooting, Verrier said.
“We’re still investigating the case, but it seems clear at this point that it was an accident,” he said.
Charges related to the target shooting may be forthcoming, since the men were shooting close to the house, he said.
Verrier said he plans to turn the case over to the Oxford County district attorney after interviewing several more witnesses. Bergeron is the legal owner of the gun, he added.
