PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Johnny Weir skated with the poised confidence of the defending champion, earning five 6.0s for presentation to win the men’s U.S. Figure Skating title on Saturday.
Weir demonstrated a full range of triple jumps, although he will likely need a quad to medal at worlds.
Timothy Goebel, a fan favorite after his emotionally charged short program, finished second and Evan Lysacek was third.
Skating to the music “Otonal,” Weir appeared to defy gravity as he landed all of his jumps with lightness and ease.
He proved that he could withstand the pressure of being the defending champion with 5.8s and 5.9s for technical prowess, as well as the five perfect scores for artistry.
Goebel was deliberate and reserved for his free skate to an orchestral arrangement of Queen songs, but showed vast improvement in his artistry and edge quality from previous years.
Michael Weiss, the three-time national champion and two-time world bronze medalist, collided with Goebel during practice and lay on the ice for several moments.
Fifth going into the free skate, Weiss two-footed a quadruple toe loop, but landed a pair of triple axels, earning him technical scores ranging from 5.3 to 5.6, and 5.5 to 5.7 for artistry. He finished fifth .

Lysacek, who won the silver last year in the junior worlds after placing fifth in the nationals, earned one 6.0 for artistry for his short program.
