RUMFORD – SAD 43 directors will decide Tuesday night whether to change the use of Virginia Elementary School.

The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

Research and discussions have been under way for months on whether to reconfigure the district’s elementary schools down from three to two.

Virginia Elementary School is the smallest of the three with about 110 K-5 students. Meroby Elementary School in Mexico and Rumford Elementary School each has about 250 students.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin has said that the district could save about $125,000 if Virginia was no longer used as an elementary school.

If directors vote to close Virginia, they will then vote on whether to use a part of it for the Day Treatment Program now housed at Meroby Elementary School.

Board Chairwoman Linda Westleigh said people will have two chances to comment on the possible change of use before the board takes a vote.

Also on Tuesday, directors will decide whether to apply for low-interest federal bonds that would help the district pay for continued removal of asbestos. They will also act on a request by a student group to visit Spain during February vacation.
