CANAAN – Raymond H. Hunt, 89, of Canaan passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, with his daughters and family at his side and he now again meets with his cherished wife, Una.

He was born in Wellington on Sept. 17, 1915, the son of Edson and Minola (Hutchins) Hunt. He was educated in the Canaan school system and then went on to high school at Goodwill Hinkley, graduating in 1933. Raymond was a life long resident of the little community and lived his life in the home that his father built.

A veteran of World War II, he was drafted into the Army in 1942, and served in the Pacific Theatre as a support mechanic. He served until the end of the war in 1946. His service to this country earned him several medals and campaign ribbons from New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. After the war he returned to Canaan, and in 1948 married Zelda Foster; they had two children, Joyce and Janice. During this time he worked with his father at their sawmill on the Black Stream; he continued working at the sawmill until it closed in 1961. He then married Una Page and they moved to his father’s house in 1966. He retired from the Hartland Tannery in 1975.

He was a Third Degree Mason for most of his adult life. He donated the land for the new Carrabassett Lodge 161 in Canaan. After retirement, Raymond enjoyed life with his wife Una. Their days were always spent together and very seldom were they ever separated for more than a few hours. They both enjoyed ice fishing, traveling to the coast and days at their cottage on Lake George. They spent their final days together simply enjoying their love and also Raymond’s two daughters, grandchildren, and their extended families. He lived for the out of doors and spent his life preserving his land and harvesting the wood it produced.

Raymond’s mansion in the sky came three years after the death of Una. He waited for their reunion and was ready to be with her and the Lord.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, but all know that his joy has been reborn in the heaven where he now resides.

He is survived by his daughters, Joyce (Hunt) Belanger and husband, Roger; Janice (Hunt) Davis, and husband, Gary; three granddaughters, Shelley, Nichole, and Erica; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to his caregiver, Casey Holt.

He was predeceased by first wife, Zelda and second wife, Una; a brother, Richard; a sister, Priscilla; and her daughter, Sherrill.
