ORONO – Keith Johnson scored a pair of goals Saturday as Maine defeated Boston University 4-2.

Jon Jankus scored Maine’s first goal at 12:09 of the first period and Greg Moore added a power play goal with 3:24 remaining. Bret Tyler added two assists for the Black Bears.

Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots in goal for Maine (13-8-5, 8-3-3 Hockey East). John Curry made 26 saves for Boston University (13-10-1, 9-4-1).

Johnson’s first goal came 2:19 into the second period to put Maine ahead 2-1. He later scored on a breakaway during a Maine power play.

David Van der Gulik and Bryan Ewing scored for Boston University.

USM 8, UMass-Boston 0

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Mark Carragher rattled off a hat trick and added a pair of assists to lead the University of Southern Maine to an 8-0 rout of the University of Massachusetts at Boston in an ECAC East hockey game Saturday.

Carragher netted the game-winner for the Huskies (8-7-2) six minutes into the first period off an assist from sophomore forward Marc Santuccio and freshman defenseman Dane Marshall. Huskies’ senior forward Erik Kent capped the game with a pair of third-period goals.

Bowdoin, Tufts tie

MALDEN, Mass. – Bowdoin and Tufts played to a 3-3 deadlock on Saturday afternoon in men’s ice hockey action at Valley Forum II.

Bowdoin seized the momentum on three goals within five minutes in the middle of the second period with goals by Bobby Cavanagh, Greg McConnell and Ian Hanley to give the Polar Bears (10-2-2) a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

The Jumbos (7-7-1) were able to even up the contest and send the game into overtime with a goal from Matt Tosto.

Tufts freshman goalie James Kalec had a solid 26 saves against the Polar Bears, while junior George Papachristopoulos had 15 stops in the Bowdoin net.

Men’s basketball

Bates 80, Williams 70

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – John Furbush and Zak Ray shared a game-high 22 points to lead Bates College to an 80-70 win over Williams in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Ephs (13-6) pulled to within five, 67-62, with just over two minutes remaining when Furbush drilled a pair of threes on consecutive Bobcat (14-4) possessions to effectively put the game out of reach.

The Ephs were able to grab a short-lived lead with 13 minutes to play, but Ray was able to keep the Bobcats poised and in control late in the game with his 22 points and five assists. Rob Stockwell established himself inside for Bates as he outmuscled and overpowered the Eph defense with his double-double, 20 points and 11 boards.

Husson 74, Maine Maritime 52

BANGOR – Buddy Leavitt and Jason Harvey tallied 21 and 18 points respectivley as Husson College downed Maine Maritime Academy 74-52 in men’s basketball play Saturday.

The Braves took a commanding 43-24 lead into the second half and never looked back as they cruised to the win.

The Mariners were paced by Nail Stewart with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds.

UMF 85, MIC 77

NEWTON, Mass. – Matt St. John poured in 25 points to power the University of Maine at Farmington to an 85-77 win over Mt. Ida College in men’s basketball on Saturday.

The Beavers held a slim 38-37 lead at the end of the first half, but pulled away as Travis Magnusson and Bobby Deetjen chipped in with 14 and 13 points respectivley.

MIC was led by Pat Escabi with 25 points, while Scott Chamberlain and Mike Dunham added 18 and 13 points.

Colby 75, Bowdoin 71

WATERVILLE – Andrew Jenkins scored 20 points, including 13 in the first half, to give Colby College a 75-71 win over Bowdoin College in men’s basketball action.

The White Mules also received 14 points from Michael Westbrooks, and Drew Cohen.

The Polar Bears were paced by Kyle Petrie with a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Andrew Hippert added 13 points.

CMCC 121, NMCC 94

PRESQUE ISLE – Jon Wallingford exploded for 34 points, including nine 3-pointers, to lead Central maine Community College to a 121-94 win over Northern Maine Community College in men’s basketball on Saturday.

The Mustangs (12-4) built a nine-point lead at the intermission behind the hot hand of Wallingford, Patrick Dempsey (20 points), and Kaleb Violette (19) to put the game out of reach. NMCC was led by Adam Miles with 25 points and Michael Worcester who added 22.

Colby 75, Bowdoin 71

WATERVILLE – Andrew Jenkins scored 20 points in a balanced attack as Colby edged Bowdoin, 75-71, in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The White Mules (10-4) led 39-34 at the half, and Jenkins notched three from beyond the arc to steal the momentum from Bowdoin. Drew Cohen and Michael Westbrooks tallied 14 points apiece.

Kyle Petrie scored a game-high 29 points for the Polar Bears (7-7), but Bowdoin missed a few key shots along the way. Bowdoin even managed to outrebound Colby by a margin of 42-24, with Petrie hauling down 11 and Mark Yakavonis another 10.

Women’s basketball

Bates 78, Williams 62

LEWISTON – Meg Coffin (14 rebounds) and Betsy Hochadel (10 rebounds) scored 17 points apiece, and Olivia Zurek added 15 to lead Bates College to a 78-62 win over Williams College in women’s basketball.

The Bobcats (14-3) held a slim eight-point lead at the end of the first half and continued to maintain the advantage throughout the second half to post the victory.

Maine Maritime 75, Lesley 37

CASTINE – Shelly Gott drained 18 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 75-37 win over Lesley University in women’s basketball Saturday.

The Mariners (13-2) jumped out to a 44-17 lead at the end of the first half and cruised to the win as Kaitlyn Leeman added 14 points.

Lesley was led by Courtnie Leakeas with 11 points.

UMF 68, MIC 46

NEWTON, Mass. – Kari Simpson scored a game-high 20 points and hauled down seven rebounds to propel the University of Maine at Farmington to a 68-46 win in women’s basketball.

The Beavers (11-4) held a 32-20 lead at the end of the first half with Brandi Rideout and Desirae Haines chipping in with 12 points apiece.

Xenos Adrienne scored 19 points to lead Mount Ida. Adrienne also hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

UNE 66, Curry 52

BIDDEFORD – First-year guard Marissa Hesketh scored a career-high 18 points to lead the University of New England to a 66-52 win over Curry in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Leading 43-37 with just over 10 minutes remaining, the Nor’easters (7-7) reeled off six consecutive points in less than a minute to disable any chance the Colonels (4-10) might have mustered. Hesketh hit all five of her second-half field goal attempts.

Katie Morin of Lewiston added eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Bowdoin 56, Colby 48

WATERVILLE – Eileen Flaherty was the star of the game with 32 points to lift Bowdoin to a 56-48 win over Colby in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Flaherty scored her 32 points for the Polar Bears (14-1) on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and a 12-of-15 effort from the foul line. Vanessa Russell was 5-of-5 from the foul line and added nine points for Bowdoin.

Wendy Bonner led the Mules (5-10) with nine points and eight rebounds, while Tanya Robash tallied six points and 11 rebounds.
